It is easy to hear disaster reports in the news and, while saddened by the devastation, not see the faces of those who have been affected. Today, we want to show you some of those faces. These are people whose lives forever changed when Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Haiti on October 4, 2016. And now they give thanks for provisions provided that offer a glimmer of hope as they continue to recover.
By working alongside other organizations and thanks to individual donations, we have delivered meals to families who lost their homes, as well as to women, children and the elderly. This food has kept families from experiencing disaster-related starvation and malnutrition. It has given them security in knowing they don’t have to look for food elsewhere; instead they can focus on shelter and other immediate life needs.
The following are three stories of survivors who have received some of our food provisions, as reported by our partners Foursquare Disaster Relief and Feed My Starving Children:
Romain Fortune has 4 children and is a single mother. Her husband passed away a number of years ago. She and her children were not harmed by the hurricane, but lost their home in the storm. Through the food relief we provided, she was able to focus on shelter repair, as well as get back to work.
Adeline Jouassaint (15 years old) lives in Jeremie and is a recipient of food aid, as she lives in our Jeremie Orphanage that was blown away by the hurricane.
Yonise Louise and her husband care for her family of 11 children in a tin shack that was repaired after the hurricane. She works by washing clothes and preparing small food items on the street. Her husband has been very ill for years, and with him unable to work, she takes care of the family and some of their nieces and nephews. She was able to get back to work without needing to worry about feeding the family and continue making her business work which supports them daily for food, water and other needs. Without her working, they cannot make it.
Foursquare Haiti continues to have favor with the cities of Jeremie and Les Cayes as we continue to minister to the physical needs that they face. Through food aid, we are able to compound our impact in addressing the food insecurity of so many families and children after Hurricane Matthew, and are very thankful for the partnership and support this food gave.
