How can you help someone on the other side of the world without leaving your kitchen?
We may have stocked refrigerators and pantries in our homes. We may have the option to cook our own dinner tonight or grab something when we leave the office. In a society of abundance, many of us don’t know what it’s like to live outside of availability. We don’t know what it’s like to live like Velia.
Velia is an elderly grandmother in Malawi who cares for her 5 orphaned grandchildren. She is frail and no longer able to work as a farmer in the fields, but she is very capable of providing a safe shelter for her grandchildren. Last year Velia became extremely ill and the family feared the worst. It is hard to imagine life without “agogo.” She holds the family together and no one was prepared for her to die. Thankfully, she recovered and continues on serving her family.
Velia and her grandchildren receive food as part of one of our continuing feeding programs. As she says, “The food is good food – it makes us strong.” And strength is what is required for Velia and her five grandchildren…and so many others in our world.
And this is how you can make a difference from your kitchen…
You’re invited to take the Beans & Rice Challenge November 12-16. The challenge is simple and straightforward:
- Eat beans and rice for a one (or more) meal(s) a day for five days.
- Tally up a typical week’s worth of groceries.
- Figure your beans and rice costs.
- Subtract those costs from your typical grocery amount.
- Donate the difference (or any amount you’d like).
As little as $2 can provide 40 meals to hungry people around the world. So, whether you give $20, $120 or more, every bit matters.
Today, commit to joining with us, so we can impact the lives of more families like Velia and her grandchildren. Mark your calendar now. Make this a learning experience for your kids. Post this link on Facebook and challenge your friends and family to take part.
Together we can make a difference. Together we can feed nations of hungry people.
