Cuban desperation

Cubans have taken to the streets in historic protests and demonstrations against the communist regime, leading to a brutal crackdown by the Cuban government including death and imprisonments for protestors. 


The Cuban people are suffering. Electricity is sporadic.  Internet access which in many cases is the only way to communicate with the outside world, is being cut off. There is a severe food and medicine shortage.  There is extreme need.


A brother from Cuba, sent the following message: “So sad to see that from the dark of dawn people go out to the street to hunt for bread, hungry people on the street fighting for a piece of bread. Wow, we are getting to where the word is fulfilled that says: ‘yet some will do wrong for a mere piece of bread.’ Today more than ever we pray, ‘Lord give us our daily bread.’”

Cuba: Providing “Rico” Meals for Amalia

“Rico” is making the difference in the life of a girl named Amalia. She lives in Cuba and since she has been receiving a steady diet of nutritious meals, her health and energy levels have improved, making it easier for her to learn and play.

Our partners, Feed My Starving Children, sent us this report on Amalia and the “rico” she has been enjoying:

Amalia is a 7-year-old girl living in a depressed area of Havana, Cuba. Although food is available in her area, the nutritious value is questionable and there is also a lack of variety in the foods available. The fortified meals are an excellent basis of nourishment for these children and combined with any additional items, in this case eggs, it will meet all vitamins and minerals required at her age.

Cuba: Providing “Rico” Meals for AmaliaShe has been receiving the food for a few months and the changes that she made are amazing. Amalia gained weight and has more energy to learn new things and play.

She thanks all those who made possible that she can eat this rice which she calls the Spanish word “rico” (good tasting).

Cuba: Hurricane Irma Relief

Hurricane Irma hit Cuba as a category 5 hurricane—the first hurricane of that strength to make landfall in the country since 1924. It claimed lives, and caused massive destruction to farmland and widespread flooding.

Because of our partnership with EchoCuba, rice and vegetable meals that we had previously sent were able to be distributed in the immediate aftermath as part of recovery efforts. We give thanks for God’s provision that these meals were already in country and able to be used when disaster struck!

EchoCuba has a network of local churches and ministries who are meeting the physical, spiritual and development needs of local communities, as best they can.

But we can do more to help.

Cuba: Hurricane Matthew Recovery Continues

Though Hurricane Matthew struck Cuba in October, the island is still recovering. We provided our partner, Echo Cuba, with more than 150 metric tons of shelf-stable prepackaged food packs to help feed hurricane victims.

“We continue helping Hurricane Matthew people affected in Eastern Cuba thanks to your generous donation,” a recent Echo Cuba report said. “The severe situation continues to be aggravated by the hurricane aftermath: difficult access to isolated communities, food shortages, health problems caused by contaminated water, slow government assistance and the scarce humanitarian aid.”

The hurricane caused $5 billion-plus in damage, a loss of 65,112 agricultural acres, destruction of 9,000 homes and severe damage to 30,000 homes. At the time of the report, 180,000 people remained isolated with no access to food, clean water and electricity.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the call and helped us reach these people with much-needed food. Continue to pray for Cuba and their recovery.

Hurricane Update: God’s Providence in Cuba

UPDATE 10/18/16:

Our partners in Cuba have established 20 feeding stations throughout the Guantanamo Province of Cuba. They have been feeding the community and showing the love of Christ.

Guantanamo was the area most affected by Hurricane Matthew. All the crops were destroyed. In most communities, 90 percent of homes are still without power and roofs. Approximately 40 percent of the homes have been completely destroyed.

We currently have food on the ground in Cuba that is being distributed to those affected by Hurricane Matthew. We give thanks for God’s providence that food we had previously sent was safely stored in warehouses for immediate use after the hurricane.

Our partners at EchoCuba have organized response teams that have been providing assistance. But they need our help to get food to even more people who have had their lives turned upside down by this natural disaster.

Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Cuba as a category 4 storm on October 4, impacting the nation for 8 hours. Baracoa, Cuba’s oldest city, is the most damaged with more than 90 percent of the houses reporting roof damage. And the city is still not accessible by land.

Damaged roads, fallen trees and downed power lines are making recovery efforts difficult in some areas. More than 176,000 people in Cuba’s Guatanamo province remain isolated. As the days go on, access to clean drinking water becomes a bigger concern.

It all started on Sunday, December 26, 2004, when an earthquake in the Indian Ocean sparked a deadly tsunami that became one of the worst natural disasters in recorded history. The tsunami killed over 230,000 people in 14 nations. Seeing the great need and the opportunity to help, FTN was born in February 2005.
