We have continued feeding 600 children in Christian schools each day. Children like Fulwanti Kisku are having their lives forever changed as a result. Fulwanti’s home is three hours away from her school. She has been staying at her school for a year now and says she likes the food better there, especially because they get chicken on Sundays. At home, they only get chicken once a month because it is so expensive. She is thankful for the food she is receiving.
Mexico: 2.5 Million Meals
Thanks to our partnerships with Hunger Plus, Root International and Way of the Cross, we have now been able to feed the hungry in Mexico. Getting the food across the border had been a problem to be solved. We celebrate that we now have solutions for getting the food safely and securely across the borders and into the hands of those who need it most. We have reached the Matamoros, Juarez and San Luis regions, covering the eastern, central and western areas of the country. While we provided 2.5 million meals last year, our efforts continue for 2014, with 1.3 million meals scheduled to arrive in March.
Philippines: 2.3 Million Meals Sent
Typhoon Haiyan—the strongest storm recorded at landfall—may have struck the Philippines two months ago, but our aid to them is far from being done. Immediately after the typhoon hit, Feeding the Nations sprung into action. During phase one of the relief efforts, we provided cash for supplies to be purchased in country to help with immediate needs. Now phase two is underway as we have sent 2.3 million meals in just two months time.
These meals were sent in six shipments between November 25 and January 17 thanks to our partnerships with World Compassion Network, Warsaw, Ind., and Global Samaritan Resources, Abilene, Texas. The 2.3 million meals are part of phase two of the relief strategy. Immediately after the disaster, FTN began phase one by providing cash for Victory Christian Fellowship, an agency with a large footprint in the Philippines, so they could purchase canned meats, bottled water, biscuits, blankets, sleeping mats and more to help with immediate needs. Phase three will be an ongoing effort to send food over the next six to 12 months as recovery continues.
Reports estimate over 11 million people were affected by the disaster, with over 6,200 lives lost and many are still homeless. We are committed to providing assistance over time to the people of the Philippines as they rebuild and recover. Just as their recovery work won’t be done overnight, our aid to them will not just be immediate, but will continue over the coming months.
It’s not too late to join with us in reaching the people of the Philippines with much-needed food.
United States: $2.3 Million Worth of Aid
Last year we were able to reach people in Indiana, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina with food and vitamins thanks to partnerships with groups such as World Assist, Christian Outreach International and Isaiah 58 Projects. We look forward to when our warehouse is completed so that we can undertake more domestic outreaches. The warehouse will open up more doors to receive and distribute more food within our own country.
Zambia: Feeding 17,000 Daily
Feeding The Nations is now helping to feed 17,000 children daily in Zambia in 35 different Christian schools and orphanages, an increase over the previous 8,000 children in 17 facilities. So far this year, we have sent 257,000 pounds (128 tons) of food. Once it arrives, the food is stored in a secure warehouse in the capital of Lusaka as it awaits weekly deliveries that are overseen by Mission Touch Ministries (MTM).
Zambia is listed as one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. Approximately one-quarter of the nation’s population is infected with HIV/AIDs. Many of the 1 million of the country’s 11 million people are street children who have been orphaned because of HIV/AIDs, malaria, cholera and other diseases. The food we are providing is vital to the children receiving it. Without it, they would not attend school because they would spend their days searching for food in the streets and dumps. While in school, we can feed their bodies, minds and souls.
We are grateful of our partnership with MTM. Because of them, the food reaches the children safely and securely. Founders, Dave and Connie Keating, sent this thank-you note:
Feeding The Nations’ overwhelmingly kind response to help provide life-saving food and basic care supplies for the people of Zambia will help brighten the future and give hope and promise to those people wanting to learn. Missions Touch Ministries extends our thanks and gratitude on behalf of these facilities for your contributions and continued support of this most worthy cause. On behalf of the Zambian people who have directly benefited, and their families, we say thank you and may God richly continue to bless you.
While we thank those who have joined with us to make this possible, we pray that we will be able to reach more. Right now, 5,000 children in need of assistance remain on a waiting list. We can do more. Will you join with us in reaching Zambia?
