Hurricane Matthew Update: Feeding 12,000 Children in Haiti

We have news to celebrate! We were able to provide food for people affected by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. We sent 272,160 meals—enough to feed 12,000 children one meal a day for 135 days. The food reached children in the valley near Gonaives, north of Port au Prince. This area has experienced severe drought for a couple of years. Then Hurricane Matthew hit them hard and brought a new disaster.

Northern Friends of Haiti, an organization founded for the purpose of developing sustainable solutions to the lack of basic human requirements in central Haitian rural communities, gratefully received and distributed these provisions of food. We have provided them with food in the past and will continue to do so. Thank you to everyone who helped us respond to these people in need. Together we are making a difference.

Hurricane Matthew Relief

Haiti and Cuba need us now. And we can help. We can be the hands and feet of Christ during this crisis.

As of Friday afternoon, the death toll from Hurricane Matthew surged to more than 800 fatalities in Haiti alone. The storm struck Haiti on Tuesday, October 4 with 145-mph winds, torrential rain and strong storm surge. As recovery efforts take place, death tolls are expected to rise, along with concerns of a cholera outbreak.

Feeding The Nations currently has food on the ground and ready for immediate distribution in both Cuba and Haiti. We are sending 6 disaster response containers of food that will provide over 1,000,000 meals to people who have seen their lives washed away. These containers will go to multiple areas to help ease the immediate need for food.

Haiti: A New Partnership and Over 544,000 Meals

Throughout the month of July, we sent over 544,320 meals to our new partner Northern Friends of Haiti that feeds 3,000 children a day. This organization works in the upper mountain valley of south Bayonnais. The region lacks clean water sources and has no power or other services. An estimated 10,500 Haitians live in this 45-square-kilometer valley that is comprised of 17 villages and surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides. Vehicle access to the area requires driving four miles on rough dirt roads before descending into a riverbed and driving up another two miles. From that point, two hand-excavated (with picks and shovels) and maintained roads climb to the upper valley. Haiti: A New Partnership and Over 544,000 Meals

We are grateful for this new partnership as we are able to reach people who are living in a desperate situation. Since the beginning of 2015, this area of Haiti has been facing a persistent drought. The lack of rainfall left crops weathered and dead, depriving these subsistence farming communities of food needed for their survival. The farmers and families caught in this severe drought have no water to irrigate. In fact, they barely have enough water to drink. Their lack of defense against this sort of calamity has been further burdened by the fact that this region has not been declared a disaster area, so it receives no governmental or relief efforts to provide assistance. We thank everyone who has made it possible to reach this region with much-needed food.

For the past few years, we have been working with Fishers of Men Ministries in Port au Prince, Haiti to provide meals for hungry children, such as this sweet girl who was dressed in her best to receive her meal…

Haiti: Feeding 4,000 Daily

Throughout 2015, we sent multiple shipments of rice/vegetable meals that were distributed to nearly 4,000 children each day in over 20 schools and orphanages throughout Haiti.

We recently received an update from Josh Scarbrough, Missions Director for Fishers of Men Ministries. He said:

The rice meals that we receive from you have greatly enhanced our feeding program, as well as the lives of the nearly 4,000 children we feed daily which for many of these children this is the only meal they will receive for the day.

Thank you so much for your continued partnership and for providing these meals and for assisting us in our service to the nation of Haiti. Without these meals and your continued support, many of these children would not receive proper nutrition and their future would be greatly diminished. On behalf of Fishers of Men Ministries International and the Nation of Haiti, we thank you and pray that God would continue to bless you and your organizations greatly.

Haiti: 2.2 Million Meals in 12 Months

In Matthew 14, Jesus performed one of his many miracles, feeding the 5,000. His disciples wanted to “send the crowds away,” so they could go find food for themselves. But Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

God has allowed us to do the same work of “giving them something to eat.” With our friends in Haiti and with your faithful help, we have sent over 1.9 million meals to Port Au Prince. These meals  have been distributed to children, the elderly and others in desperate need of food.

But that’s not the end of the story.

In the next month, we are sending another container of food to continue feeding these 5,000 and more. This will put us over 2.2 million meals sent to Haiti in 12 months!

What an honor; what an accomplishment! We thank God that he is using you and that He is using FTN to reach the hungry, lost and hurting of Haiti. Please continue your support as we continue to reach Haiti with food and love.

Our Own Story

It all started on Sunday, December 26, 2004, when an earthquake in the Indian Ocean sparked a deadly tsunami that became one of the worst natural disasters in recorded history. The tsunami killed over 230,000 people in 14 nations. Seeing the great need and the opportunity to help, FTN was born in February 2005. Its very first mission was to get vital food and nutrition to those who were affected by the tsunami.

Nearly two decades later, FTN is still committed to sharing the love of God, while bringing the abundance of the developed world to those in critical need in the third world.
