Saturday’s earthquake caused massive destruction along Haiti’s southern side. The death toll is over 2,000. There are over 12,000 injured and thousands more without homes. Haitian officials estimate there are 600,000 people in need of emergency assistance. The UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) says about 500,000 children have limited or no access to shelter, safe water and food. An aid worker told the AP “Children are crying on the streets (from hunger) and people are asking for food.” Haiti is also reeling from Tropical Storm Grace which is further compounding problems and complicating relief efforts. There is a desperate and immediate need for food, water, and shelter.
