Kenya: Giving Food, Medicine and the Gospel

The Feeding The Nations Finland office has been working with missionaries in Kenya to provide food and medicine for the Oasis Medical Centre near Mombasa in Mtwapa.

In December, they distributed food to the village of Gede on the Kenyan coast where hunger is rampant. They started a church there 8 years ago. At that time, hardly anyone had heard about Jesus. Now the church is full of children and young adults who believe in Jesus! A new generation of Christians is growing there.

We thank God for this opportunity to reach the Kenyan coast with food and the hope of Christ. We also thank our missionaries on the ground and those of you who have partnered with us to make this possible. Together, we are doing Kingdom work!

#TRI2FEED: Put Your Face in the Water

The sounds of a YMCA pool fill your ears; water cascading in the over-flow, kids laughing and splashing, instructors giving pointers, parents talking in the seats, and that one kid screaming as he clutches the side of the pool for dear life due to his fear of going under the water.

If we flash back 30+ years ago, that kid screaming on the side of the pool was me. As much as I don’t want to admit it to myself or anyone else, that is where my lack of swimming skill was honed, while white-knuckled and red-faced. Two weeks ago I walked back in to the exact same YMCA and faced the exact same pool where I had unfinished business.

At 6:00 a.m., with a smile on her face, my swimming coach said, “Swim to the end and back, so I can see what we have to work with.” A little while later as I finished one slow lap of the pool and clutched the exact same pool-side, she followed up her first comment with, “Well, you made it.” We then started where I left off so many years ago, drill after drill of putting my face in the water and swimming. This time without using any arms or hands for a full two weeks worth of training.

My struggle with swimming somewhat reflects the struggle that so many kids around the world have every day of their lives. They have to be uncomfortable, nervous and even fearful of what their day or weeks will have in store for them. A big difference is that I have a choice to do something about my struggle with swimming. The orphans on the streets of Lusaka, Zambia or Tegucigalpa, Honduras, don’t have the choice to make theirs go away. In Zambia alone there is reported to be over 1 million orphans. This gives it the highest number of orphans per capita in the world.

With numbers like that, so many of us wonder how can we make a difference. That is why I am pursuing the Ironman Triathlon with a goal of raising $20,000.00. If this goal is met, we could send 500,000 meals or, put another way, feed 685 kids two meals a day for an entire year.

#TRI2FEED: 70.3 Miles and One Goal to Feed Hungry People

Can participating in a triathlon help feed hungry children around the world? It certainly can.

On August 13, 2017, Josh Page-Wood, co-director of Feeding The Nations, will take part in the Ironman 70.3 Steelhead triathlon in Benton Harbor, MI. Josh has never swam more than 25 yards or biked more than 15 miles or ran more than 7 miles. So why is he doing an Ironman?

“Because of my day job,” he said. “Being co-director of FTN, I see stories and pictures of kids around the world who don’t have much to eat, if anything. One day I was watching my two boys. They have a nice house to live in, clothes to wear and plenty of food to eat. Suddenly I had the saddening thought of how so many kids are given so little in life.”

That moment stirred something in Josh; it motivated him to action. “I want to do more than sit at my desk and work logistics. I want to do something tangible.”

So Josh set a goal. He will spend seven months training for a race with durations he has never completed individually, let alone all together. He will swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles and then run 13.1 miles all with the purpose of feeding hungry children.

His ultimate goal is to raise $20,000 for Feeding The Nations and all we do to bring the abundance of the developed world to those in critical need around the world.

If Josh reaches that goal, that could provide 500,000 meals! Or, put another way, that could feed 685 children 2 meals a day for an entire year!

Hurricane Matthew Update: Feeding 12,000 Children in Haiti

We have news to celebrate! We were able to provide food for people affected by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. We sent 272,160 meals—enough to feed 12,000 children one meal a day for 135 days. The food reached children in the valley near Gonaives, north of Port au Prince. This area has experienced severe drought for a couple of years. Then Hurricane Matthew hit them hard and brought a new disaster.

Northern Friends of Haiti, an organization founded for the purpose of developing sustainable solutions to the lack of basic human requirements in central Haitian rural communities, gratefully received and distributed these provisions of food. We have provided them with food in the past and will continue to do so. Thank you to everyone who helped us respond to these people in need. Together we are making a difference.

An Unpretty, but Essential Christmas Gift

This is a season of celebrating beauty. We search for the perfect gifts, wrap them in pretty paper and tie them up with ribbons. We decorate our homes and play inspiring music, all to remember and honor the most perfect gift: our Savior.

This year, you’re invited to give a gift that may not be shiny and beautiful. Honestly, it’s more like nuts and bolts, and down to earth gritty details. But it’s important and vital to our mission of feeding hungry people around the world.

Jesus said, “The poor you will have with you always.” He also said, “Give them to eat.” We can do just that. The job is big, but not bigger than our God!

You may not realize the many steps involved from procuring food, all the way to making certain that the food is given to a child in desperate need. One huge step is a place to assemble the food, medical supplies, building material and many of the things required when helping those in crisis with disaster relief and food.

As you know, the Lord placed on our hearts a vision to build a warehouse of our own at our ministry headquarters in South Bend, IN. This warehouse ensures that we are able to respond quickly and efficiently to people around the world. We can gather, store and assemble food and supplies, sending off the loads by truck in containers, which can hold up to 272,000 meals.

The good news is that, thanks to the generosity of many, the warehouse is now standing on our property and we were able to dedicate it a few months ago. But more work needs to be done for absolute completion and operating readiness.

A wonderful brother in the Lord and Pastor, Lawson Perdue from Colorado Springs, has given Feeding The Nations a gift extending a challenge. If we can raise $10,000, Lawson’s church will match every dollar given! You cannot imagine the joy I felt when he told me what he wanted to do.

What an amazing opportunity! Will you be part of this challenge to double every gift given up to $10,000? Can I count on you? It isn’t the type of gift you’ll wrap and place under your Christmas tree this year, but this gift will have the ability to make a kingdom impact, an impact for eternity!

So I ask you to prayerfully consider how you can help us reach this goal of receiving $20,000 this Christmas. Please help us complete the God-sized dream we were given to share our abundance with those in critical need around the world. From personal giving, to ministries and business, let’s get this accomplished.

We determined not to borrow money from the bank to construct this warehouse, and we have kept that determination. Please pray, and if the Lord touches your heart, give. As we contemplate the gift of Christ our Savior and thank God for the close of this year, we are believing for miracles! We need your most generous gift.

Let’s be the hands and feet of Christ this Christmas. Let’s be His love in action by finishing this warehouse, so in 2017, we can focus even more of our efforts on feeding and loving the least of these.

Think of all the good that we can do together to bless the forgotten of the world.
